There are plenty of occasions during winter when you want to make an effort with what you're wearing, but a full suit feels a bit too formal. Perhaps you've got a Christmas meal coming up, a dinner date or a work event where nobody seems quite sure of the dress code.

Thankfully, you don't need a matching jacket and trousers to look smart. A good blazer, a decent pair of boots or even a leather jacket can work just as well. And with knitwear, tweed and heavier fabrics to choose from, winter is a great time to try something different.

A Blazer Can Make All the Difference

If you've already got a blazer hanging in your wardrobe, you've got a good starting point.

Rather than wearing it with matching suit trousers, try pairing it with chinos, dark jeans or tailored trousers in a contrasting colour. A navy blazer with grey trousers is a classic combination, while brown and olive tones are good choices if you fancy something a little different.

Tweed and checked blazers are particularly good for winter. They've got a little more texture than your typical business jacket and look great with plain trousers and leather boots.

One thing worth avoiding is pairing two very similar colours that don't quite match. A navy jacket with slightly different navy trousers, for example, can look like you've accidentally mixed up two suits.

And if you don't have a blazer in your wardrobe, take a look at our men's blazers. We stock a great range of classic and modern styles, including tweed, checked and plain designs.

Try a Roll-Neck Instead of a Shirt

Shirts and ties have their place, but they're certainly not your only option when dressing smart.

A roll-neck jumper worn beneath a blazer is a great winter combination, particularly if you're heading out for dinner or getting dressed for a Christmas party. It's warm, comfortable and makes a nice change to your usual formalwear.

Black is probably the easiest colour to work with. It looks good beneath grey, navy and checked jackets, while cream is another lovely option, particularly with brown or green tailoring.

Stick to a fairly fine knit if you're wearing a fitted blazer. Thick, chunky jumpers can make the jacket feel tight around your shoulders and arms, which isn't particularly comfortable when you're sitting down for a meal.

Don't Rule Out a Leather Jacket

Leather jackets tend to be associated with more casual outfits, but that doesn't mean you can't dress them up.

A simple men's leather jacket can look great with tailored trousers and a fine-knit jumper. Black leather works particularly well with charcoal and grey, while brown leather looks good alongside cream, navy and other warmer colours.

The style of jacket makes a difference here. A plain leather bomber or racer jacket is usually easier to dress up than a biker jacket covered in zips and buckles. If you're wearing leather for an evening out, try keeping the rest of your outfit fairly simple. You don't need a patterned jumper, statement trousers and heavily detailed boots all competing for attention.

And remember, not all leather jackets are especially warm. If you're planning to spend much time outside, a lined jacket or an extra layer underneath might be a better choice.

Our men's leather jacket collection includes classic biker jackets, bombers and aviator styles in a range of colours and finishes.

Chelsea Boots Are Worth Having in Your Wardrobe

The right footwear can make even a simple outfit look smarter.

A pair of leather Chelsea boots is one of the most useful options for winter. They're smart enough to wear with tailored trousers but don't look out of place with dark denim or a leather jacket.

Black leather boots are an easy choice for evening outfits, especially if you're wearing darker colours. Brown boots look particularly good with navy trousers, grey tailoring and tweed jackets. Suede Chelsea boots can work nicely too, although they're not always the most practical choice during a wet British winter.

If boots aren't your thing, Derby shoes are another reliable option. They work well with smart trousers and chinos, while loafers are worth considering for indoor events.

Whatever you choose, make sure your trousers sit properly over your footwear. Too much fabric gathering around the ankles can spoil an otherwise good outfit.

You Can Still Wear Jeans and Look Smart

Jeans aren't automatically off the table just because you're dressing for a nicer occasion. A good pair of dark jeans can work with a blazer, knitwear and leather shoes, especially for casual Christmas gatherings, meals out or drinks with friends.

The fit matters more than anything. Straight or slightly tapered jeans are a good starting point, preferably without obvious fading, rips or distressed patches. Dark indigo and black are generally easier to dress up than lighter washes.

For example, try black jeans with a charcoal roll-neck, a brown leather jacket and Chelsea boots. It's an outfit that doesn't feel overly formal but still looks like you've made an effort.

Of course, some occasions call for something smarter. If you're attending a formal dinner or an event with a specific dress code, tailored trousers are usually the safer option.

A Few Good Pieces Go a Long Way

You don't need a completely new wardrobe every winter. Often, it's simply a case of wearing things you already own in slightly different ways.

And if you're looking to add something new, our range at TruClothing includes men's blazers, leather jackets, Chelsea boots and formal shoes that you can wear well beyond the Christmas party season.

Sometimes, getting dressed up is more enjoyable when you can leave the suit in the wardrobe.
