Wedding Suits for Men

How to Choose the Right Wedding Suit

Start with how formal the wedding will be. If you are the groom, choose a suit that suits the setting and decide how your outfit will differ from the groomsmen. A three-piece suit, contrasting waistcoat or different accessories can set you apart while keeping the wedding party coordinated. Guests should follow the invitation, a black-tie wedding calls for a tuxedo or dinner suit, while a two-piece or three-piece suit will suit most other weddings.

Next, consider the season and venue. Linen, lightweight fabrics and fewer layers are practical for summer and destination weddings. Tweed, checks and herringbone add texture and work particularly well for country venues and cooler months. Plain navy, grey and blue tailoring works across a wide range of settings.

Think about when you might wear the suit again. Changing the shirt, tie or waistcoat can make the same suit suitable for race days, graduations, parties and other smart occasions.

 Popular Men’s Wedding Suit Colours

Colour can change how formal or seasonal a suit feels.

•    Navy works throughout the year and is easy to wear again. Pair it with a white or pale blue shirt and black or brown shoes.
•    Grey can look traditional or modern. Charcoal has a more formal appearance, while light grey suits spring, summer and daytime ceremonies.
•    Mid-blue adds more colour than navy without being difficult to style. Pale blue works particularly well in warmer months.
•    Green is a popular alternative to blue and grey. Sage suits lighter wedding colours, while olive and dark green work well with richer shades.
•    Brown pairs naturally with tweed, checks, cream shirts and brown leather shoes.
•    Beige and cream work well for outdoor, summer and destination weddings. White shirts and tan accessories keep the outfit looking smart.
•    Black suits formal and evening weddings. Choose a tuxedo rather than a standard black suit when black tie is requested.

Your men’s wedding suit does not need to match the wedding colours exactly. A waistcoat, tie, pocket square or buttonhole can introduce the chosen shade while leaving the main suit easier to wear again.

How To Order Your Wedding Suit

  1. Measure your chest, waist and inside leg before ordering. Compare these measurements with the size guide for the exact product, as sizing can differ between brands and styles.
  2. If several people are ordering the same suit, collect everyone’s measurements and check that each required size and length is in stock before placing the orders.
  3. Order at least two or three months before the wedding. This leaves time for delivery, exchanges and alterations. Allow longer when several matching suits are needed.
  4. Try on the complete outfit as soon as it arrives, including the intended shirt and shoes. Check children’s suits again nearer the wedding, as their measurements may change.

TruClothing also stocks matching father and son suits and boys’ suits for page boys and younger members of the wedding party

Wedding Suits for Men FAQs

Can you wear a black suit to a wedding?

Yes. A black suit works well for formal and evening weddings. Wear it with a white or light-coloured shirt and a coloured or patterned tie if you want to soften the look. If the invitation states black tie, choose a tuxedo or dinner suit instead of a standard black suit.

What colour suit is best for a wedding?

Navy and mid grey suit almost every skin tone and venue, which is why they remain the most popular wedding suit colours. Browns and greens work well for rustic and autumn weddings, while beige and lighter blues come into their own in spring and summer.

How should a wedding suit fit?

Start with the shoulders because this area is difficult and costly to alter. The seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, the collar should lie flat and the jacket should close without pulling.

Sleeves should finish around the wrist bone with a small amount of shirt cuff showing. Trousers should sit securely at the waist and meet the shoes with a slight break. Sleeve lengths, waistlines and trouser hems can often be altered, depending on the suit’s construction.

When should wedding suits be ordered?

Aim to order at least two or three months before the wedding. Start earlier if several matching adult or children’s suits are needed. This allows time for delivery, size exchanges, alterations and trying on the complete outfit.
